Immediate loading

When bone and implant conditions allow, a temporary tooth can be placed quickly, while respecting the stability criteria required for healing.

Key points

Immediate loading allows a fixed provisional prosthesis to be placed on the same day as implant placement. When bone and biological conditions are favorable, this approach avoids any toothless period and preserves comfort and aesthetics during the healing phase.
At the 47VH clinic in Nice, we assess this option during the pre-implant consultation.

What is immediate loading?

After placement of a dental implant, a healing period of approximately three months is generally required before the definitive prosthesis can be placed. This corresponds to osseointegration—the time needed for bone to integrate firmly with the surface of the implant.

During this period, the patient needs a temporary solution. Conventional alternatives—bonded bridges and removable dentures—have real drawbacks: risk of debonding, speech difficulties, and daily discomfort.

When conditions allow, we place a fixed provisional prosthesis on the same day as the procedure. This is immediate loading: extraction, implant placement, and a fixed temporary restoration are performed in a single session.

This protocol is scientifically validated and does not increase the risk of implant failure when proper selection criteria are respected.

In which cases do we propose immediate loading?

Replacement of a tooth in the aesthetic zone

When a visible tooth—incisor, canine, or premolar—needs to be extracted, we can perform the extraction, place the implant, and fit a screw-retained provisional crown in a single day. The patient leaves with a fixed, aesthetic, and comfortable temporary tooth.

Clinical case

Immediate aesthetic restoration of a single tooth – in one day

Full-arch dental replacement

When all the teeth in an arch need to be replaced, we extract the compromised teeth, place multiple implants, and secure a screw-retained provisional bridge on the same day. This approach—known as All-on-4 or All-on-6—allows the patient to leave with a full fixed dentition immediately after the procedure.

Clinical case

Immediate loading full-arch restoration – in one day

What are the advantages of immediate loading?

  • No visible toothless period.
  • Comfort and aesthetics are preserved throughout the healing phase.
  • Reduced number of procedures.
  • Preservation of post-extraction bone volume.
  • Scientifically validated protocol, with no additional risk of implant failure when the criteria are respected.

FAQ

Is immediate loading possible in all cases?

No — it is only indicated when bone and biological conditions allow it.

Several criteria must be met: sufficient primary implant stability, adequate bone volume, and absence of active infection. This is why we systematically evaluate this option during the pre-implant consultation, after analysis of 3D imaging.

Does immediate loading increase the risk of implant failure?

No — when proper selection criteria are respected, this protocol does not increase the risk of implant failure.

Indeed, numerous scientific studies support this approach. However, we only recommend it in situations where biological and mechanical conditions ensure optimal healing.

Is the same-day provisional prosthesis functional?

It allows you to eat and speak normally, but with certain precautions.

During the osseointegration phase, we recommend avoiding hard or crunchy foods in order not to overload the implant. Soft foods and liquids are permitted from the day after surgery.

How long is the provisional prosthesis worn?

We replace the provisional prosthesis with the definitive one approximately three months after implant placement.

This period corresponds to the osseointegration phase. Once we confirm proper integration of the implant, we take impressions for the final prosthesis in coordination with your referring dentist.

Is immediate loading painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia — you will feel no pain during the treatment.

In addition, post-operative effects are generally mild. Slight swelling may occur for 5 to 7 days. We systematically provide a tailored prescription and written post-operative instructions.

Can immediate loading be performed on several teeth at the same time?

Yes — this is actually one of the main indications for this protocol.

When several teeth in the same arch need to be replaced, we extract the compromised teeth, place the implants, and fit a full provisional bridge on the same day. This allows the patient to leave with a fixed and functional dentition immediately after the procedure.
