Two main stages are distinguished:<\/p>\n<h3>Gingivitis<\/h3>\n<p>First stage of periodontal disease. The gums become red, swollen, and bleed during brushing. At this stage, the damage is reversible. If gingivitis is not treated, it may progress to deeper involvement of the supporting tissues.<\/p>\n<h3>Periodontitis<\/h3>\n<p>Advanced stage in which the infection spreads beneath the gumline. Bacteria cause progressive destruction of the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. Periodontal pockets form between the gum and the tooth root.
